Do I need a permit to film in Greece?
Yes. All commercial productions in Greece require a filming permit, and the issuing authority depends on the location type. Athens city locations go through the City of Athens Film Office; national monuments and archaeological sites require approval from the Central Archaeological Council; private land is handled by direct agreement with the owner. For private location shoots, permits typically take 3–5 working days. Public space and heritage site permits take 10–15 working days. Atlas Locations handles every permit application on your behalf — you tell us the dates, we take care of the paperwork.
What insurance does my production need to work in Greece?
Productions filming in Greece must carry Public Liability Insurance with minimum cover of €1 million — higher cover is required for shoots in public spaces or at heritage sites. Equipment insurance and Employers’ Liability are also standard requirements. Most UK and international production policies already include European or worldwide territorial coverage — check with your broker that Greece is included and that the indemnity level meets the permit conditions. We advise on the exact certificate requirements for each specific permit application.
When is the best time of year to film in Greece?
Greece shoots year-round, but the seasons matter. Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–November) give the best conditions — mild temperatures, consistent golden light, and manageable tourist levels at key sites. Summer (July–August) in Athens regularly hits 38–42°C and brings heavy tourist presence at landmark exteriors, which adds logistics cost and scheduling pressure. Winter offers exceptional light quality, empty streets, faster permit turnarounds and lower rates — ideal for interiors and urban exteriors. Some island locations have reduced ferry access in winter, but mainland and Athens shoots are unaffected. We can advise on the right window for your specific brief. August is a difficult month as everyone goes on holiday to escape the heat, many offices and business close for this whole period.
What are the drone filming regulations in Greece?
Greece operates under EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) rules enforced by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA). Commercial drone operations require an HCAA-registered operator and a specific operating authorisation. Approval is mandatory before flying within 5km of any airport, over populated areas, above 120 metres, or at archaeological and heritage sites. Athens has restricted airspace zones around the Acropolis and several central areas — these require advance HCAA clearance and are not available for same-day requests. All Atlas Locations drone work is flown by an HCAA-authorised operator with full production insurance. We apply for all required airspace approvals as part of every drone booking — lead time is typically 5–10 working days for restricted zones.
